Gheorghe Mustea was born in 1951 in the village of Mîndreşti, Republic of Moldova. He graduated the Music Academy “G. Musicescu” from Chişinău in 1975 with a Diploma of flute (with professor V. Rotaru). He also studied composition with professor V. Zagorschi and symphonic and opera conducting with professor I. Alterman (student of the great Russian conductor A. Gauk), graduating them in 1980. During 1984-1986 Gh. Mustea specialized as a conductor with Professor A. Dmitriev at the Philharmonic Academic Symphony Orchestra “D. Shostakovich” from Leningrad (St. Petersburg).

As a composer Gh. Mustea went through all kinds of styles from symphonic music to opera, from chamber and vocal-symphonic music to film and theatre music.

His opera with a historical subject “A. Lăpuşneanu” (libretto by Gheorghe Dimitriu) is an original combination of modern symphonic musical language with local folklore. This opera was presented not only in Moldova, but also abroad - at the Bolshoy Theatre in Moscow, in Permi, Sverdlovsk and on other stages.

In 1980 his First Concert for Orchestra was awarded the third prize at the composition contest in Moscow. He was also awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Moldova in 1990 for his opera “A. Lăpuşneanu”.
        
Gheorghe Mustea’s name is associated with “Teleradio-Moldova” Company’s National Symphony Orchestra founded in 1989, when he was named chief-conductor of this ensemble of 96 persons. Now he is the general artistic director of this orchestra. Gh. Mustea is performing about 25 symphonic concerts a year with “Teleradio-Moldova” National Symphony Orchestra, also recording for Radio and TV symphonic and vocal symphonic works from the national and the universal repertoire.

Gh. Mustea has many tours with “Teleradio-Moldova” Company’s National Symphony Orchestra and with other chamber and symphonic orchestras from Moldova and other countries.

His art was applauded in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Norway, South Korea and in all the countries from former URSS. Gh. Mustea also represented his country in different artistic performances in India, Bulgaria, Hungary, Mongolia, Estonia, Russia, Belarus and so on.  

In 1990 Gh. Mustea was asked to lead the international Master Class for young conductors in Manfredonia, Italy.
        
Gh. Mustea’s musical experience is not limited by his activity as a conductor and a composer: as a Professor of composition and symphonic conducting at the Academy of Music, Theater and Fine Arts, he shares his rich artistic experience with young musicians. During 1999-2002 he was the Rector of the Academy of Music.

For his rich musical activity as a conductor, composer and professor, Gh. Mustea was decorated with the highest distinction of the Republic of Moldova - title of “People’s Artist”.
